Self Hypnosis: Myth Vs Fact

Updated: Jun 26, 2019

Self hypnosis and hypnotherapy can be a fantastic way of reducing stress, calming your emotions, and opening your mind to new ideas. This has seen particular success with people suffering from addictions. For example, Dr Jack Gibson helped many patients quit their smoking habits completely, only through the use of hypnotherapy. Whilst in a deeply relaxed state, you will begin to focus all of your energy on a specific goal. What makes self hypnosis even more attractive is that it can be done in the comfort of your home. If you are feeling anxious about involving people in your current struggles with addiction or mental health, self hypnosis is worth giving a try.

Despite the large database of hypnotherapy users who swear by its success in healing their problems, many others are confronted with skepticism. Myths surrounding hypnosis are mainly derived from the movies, where hypnosis is represented as a form of entertainment, rather than portraying its therapeutic benefits.

Here are some of the myths you may have heard:

“I TRIED HYPNOSIS ONCE AND IT DIDN’T WORK”

That may be absolutely true. The individual who told you that they have tried hypnosis but failed may not be telling lies – you have to understand that the benefits of hypnotherapy are not immediately effective. Many in their first time experimenting with self hypnosis, find that their mind begins to wander throughout the session. Not only is this very normal, but it is a common issue people have first time round. You may feel like you’re not going deep enough into a trance-like state, or don’t think you are doing it right. Let’s put it this way. When you learnt to ride a bike, did you expect to be able to ride without hands on your first try? The answer to that is No. You kept on trying until you achieved your goal. Same goes for self hypnosis. Don’t expect that the first time is going to be perfect; if it is, then great! Just remember that the more you practise, the better it becomes.

“I HEAR YOU CAN ONLY HYPNOTISE WEAK MINDED PEOPLE”

This one couldn’t be further from the truth. Want us to prove this to you?. Remember that time you were completely bored out of your mind, and began to ‘zone out’. This is often known as daydreaming. Everybody on planet earth has daydreamed at least once in their lives. What you may not realise is that daydreaming is in fact you being in a mild trance state. As humans, we do it naturally without even realising we’re doing it. When people tell you that only the weak-minded can be hypnotised, they must be suggesting that only weak minded people daydream. We all know that isn’t true. With self hypnosis, you are just putting yourself into this trance state, but intentionally rather than unintentionally. During this period of trance, you brain is more easily suggestable, so you can reap many lifestyle benefits.

“IF I DO SELF HYPNOSIS I MAY END UP BELIEVING I’M AN ANIMAL”

Let’s get this straight. Stage hypnosis is drastically different from hypnotherapy. Stage hypnosis aims to entertain a crowd of paying customers, but hypnotherapy aims to heal individuals from their sufferings. Don’t confuse the two – undergoing a hypnotherapy session will not lead you to forget your name or dance around like a turkey.

“I’M NOT DOING IT BECAUSE I MIGHT GET STUCK IN A TRANCE”

This just isn’t possible. If you end up sleeping as a result of the deeply relaxing experience, you will wake up naturally, as normal and with no side effects! Being stuck in a trance will not happen to you, so if this is what’s putting you off self hypnosis, consider giving it a go and staying consistent with it.

Self hypnosis has been proven to be successful through numerous case studies, with individuals praising its benefits. Myths and rumours spread, but shouldn’t be taken to heart. If you are interested in performing self hypnosis for yourself, do it and don’t allow people to make that judgement on your behalf.
